ISLAMABAD: Following the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Election Act 2017 case that disqualified Nawaz Sharif as Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz president, the party held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the names for the next president.
During the meeting, senior party leaders recommended the name of Punjab Cheif Minister Shehbaz Sharif calling him “influential and non-controversial personality”.
According to the sources, Nawaz had sought recommendations from senior party leaders regarding the headship of the party.
The PML-N leaders were unanimously agreed that Shehbaz’s performance had been excellent. sources added.
The meeting also said that Shehbaz’s appointment as president would improve the strained ties between state institutions, sources claimed.
The final decision will be taken by Nawaz and will be approved by the party’s Central Executive Committee.
The party has already nominated Shehbaz as its candidate for the prime ministership in upcoming general elections.
