Six people were injured in a blast in Gulistan-e-Johar area of Karachi on Saturday night, a private TV channel reported.
The blast took place near Perfume Chowk where Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) had organised a mehfil-e-milad. DIG East Aamir Farooqui said it was a cracker blast. He said a cracker bomb-type was hurled in a box which resulted in injuries to at least six people. The injured were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medical treatment. Two of the injured are stated to be in critical condition. SSP East Azfar Mahesar said a cracker was thrown near the venue of the milad. However, the MQM leaders remained unhurt in the attack, he said. Police said the gathering was being held without taking prior permission from the relevant authorities.
MQM-P leader Faisal Sabzwari claimed that Convener Khalid Maqbool and Khawaja Izhar ul Hassan narrowly escaped the attack. He said several of his party workers were injured in the explosion. Police and other law enforcers cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. Following the blast, personnel of the Bomb Disposal Squad searched the surroundings to make sure that no other bomb was planted in the vicinity. The Counter Terrorism Department and forensic experts also reached on the spot and collected necessary evidences to launch a probe into the incident. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Governor Imran Ismail have taken notice of the incident. The chief minister directed the Karachi commissioner and Sindh police additional inspector general to submit a report on the incident.
