The Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) for polio in Sindh has confirmed one new polio case for the year 2020, taking total tally in Sindh to three and Pakistan to eight.
Spokesperson EOC Sindh said a 40-month-old girl, a resident of UC Jamal in Kashmore District, has been affected by polio with weakness in both lower limbs, and the date of onset was 16-01-2020. According to parents he had received 7 doses of OPV and an investigation is ongoing into these claims.
The National EOC and Sindh EOC have started to fight back to get polio eradication on track and reverse this trend. The first step was the successful Dec NID followed by a case response in January and yet another campaign will be conducted in February.
He said efforts and delivery of quality campaigns over the next few months will bridge the immunity gap that will lead to significant decrease in intensity of virus transmission in 2nd half of 2020.
He explained that current risk to our children is very real and while it is our job to deliver these vaccines at the doorstep, caregivers must also step up and protect their children through vaccinations. The National EOC and Sindh EOC urged parents to ensure immunization of their children both in routine as well as the special campaigns planned by the programme during next few months.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday expressed the government s resolve to utilize all out resources for eradication of polio.
He was talking to a high-level delegation of Rotary International led by its President Holger Knaack in Islamabad. The delegation led by the organization’s president was briefed over the country-wide immunization campaigns to tackle the virus. It was briefed that over 250,000 polio-workers were engaged during the process and more than 40 million children are administered polio drops in it. The Rotary delegation lauded the efforts of the government. Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that eliminating polio from the country was their top priority and there is a consensus among all stakeholders on the matter. “We are utilizing our all resources in this regard and special steps were also taken to deal with the issue at Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas,” he said adding that the step was aimed at limiting the scope of any cross-border transmission of the virus.
The premier while applauding the efforts of the Rotary International, said that he respects efforts from any organization working for polio eradication. “We will facilitate such organizations to the best of our ability,” he said.
